Gemcitabine

Gemcitabine is a chemotherapy drug used to treat various types of cancer. It belongs to a class of medications known as antimetabolites, which work by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.


Key Indications:
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Non-small cell lung cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer

How It’s Used:

Gemcitabine is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion, usually once a week or in cycles, depending on the type of cancer being treated.


Common Side Effects:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood cell counts (increased risk of infection, bleeding, anemia)
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Hair loss

Serious Risks:
  • Severe bone marrow suppression
  • Liver or kidney damage
  • Lung problems (difficulty breathing)
  • Allergic reactions

Precautions:

Inform your doctor of any other medications or health conditionsissues or a history of substance abuse.

Regular blood tests are needed to monitor blood counts and organ function

Avoid use in pregnancy – may cause harm to the fetus
