Azithromycin
What is it for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections such as:
- Bronchitis
- Pneumonia
- STDs
- Infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, throat, skin, and reproductive organs
It can also prevent or treat Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in people with HIV.
How to take it:
- Comes as tablets or liquid (regular and extended-release)
- Take once daily (with or without food), or once weekly for MAC prevention
- Take at the same time each day
- Shake the liquid well before use
- Use a proper measuring device
- Follow instructions carefully; do not skip doses or stop early unless advised
Important precautions:
- Inform your doctor if you’re allergic to macrolides (e.g., erythromycin) or have liver, heart, or kidney issues
- Let your doctor know all medications or supplements you’re taking
- Be cautious if using antacids — ask about timing
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Possible side effects:
Common:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache
Serious (seek help immediately): - Irregular heartbeat, dizziness, rash or blistering skin, severe diarrhea, liver problems, allergic reactions
Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next dose, skip it—do not double up.
Storage and disposal:
Use proper medication disposal methods—do not flush
Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture
Do not refrigerate extended-release liquid
Discard leftover suspension after 10 days (or 12 hours for extended-release)
