Metformina Clorhidrato
Metformina clorhidrato is an oral antidiabetic medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps control blood sugar levels, especially in overweight patients, and is often the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes.
Key Uses:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent)
- May be used with insulin or other medications
- Sometimes prescribed for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (off-label)
How It Works:
Metformin works by:
- Reducing glucose production in the liver
- Decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose
- Improving insulin sensitivity
Dosage & Administration:
- Taken orally, with meals to reduce stomach upset
- Available in immediate-release and extended-release tablets
- Usual starting dose: 500 mg once or twice daily, gradually increased
- Maximum dose: 2000–2550 mg/day, depending on the formulation
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach discomfort
- Metallic taste
Serious Side Effect (Rare):
- Lactic acidosis – a rare but serious condition; seek medical help if experiencing weakness, difficulty breathing, or unusual muscle pain
Precautions:
- Not for use in type 1 diabetes
- Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment
- Avoid alcohol
- Monitor kidney function regularly
