Omeprazol

Omeprazol is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly prescribed for gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other acid-related disorders.


Key Uses:
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal)
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination with antibiotics)
  • Dyspepsia and heartburn relief

How It Works:

Omeprazol inhibits the proton pump in the stomach lining, which blocks acid secretion and helps heal and prevent ulcers and acid reflux symptoms.


Dosage & Administration:
  • Taken orally, usually once daily before a meal
  • Common adult dose: 20–40 mg per day
  • For H. pylori treatment: used with antibiotics in a triple therapy regimen

Common Side Effects:
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Flatulence

Serious (Rare) Side Effects:
  • Low magnesium (muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use
  • Increased risk of bone fractures with prolonged high doses

Precautions:
  • Use with caution in liver disease
  • Long-term use should be monitored
  • May interact with drugs like clopidogrel, warfarin, and diazepam
